PSS HISTORY
written by
Nasr-ul-Islam
On a hot humid evening of September 11, 1987 few amateur philatelists of
Peshawar, the capital city of North Western Frontier Province (NWFP)
gathered at the house of a fellow senior philatelist. While snipping over
cups of traditional green tea deliberated how to make profligate philately
in their part of the world. After lengthy discussions they decided to
launch a philatelic entity in their province. And the host of this initial
gathering Muhammad Nawaz Siddique was asked to be their Chairman emitters.
At that time nobody knew that this bunch of handful amateurish collectors
would turn out to be one of the leading philatelic body of the country in
the days to come. Within the next three years the society rose to
prominence and from a local philatelic society assumed the role of a major
philatelic entity of Pakistan. The amateurish philatelists turned
themselves into eminent philatelists of the country. The society embarked
upon a programmed of pollinating philately in every nook and corner of the
country. For this purpose the society established junior philatelic clubs
at high school level, wherein the monthly gatherings the upcoming collectors
are advised how to build and maintain a good stamp collection. A stamp
market is held in which the stamp dealers open their sales booths and an
auction is held after every thirty Roman calendar days.
Since its inception the society has been working closely with the Pakistan
Post Office and had organized National Philatelic Exhibitions since 1990
frequently. The Pakistan Post Office has honored all these exhibitions by
issuing special commemorative Postmarks and souvenir covers. The Stamp
Collector is the official publication of the Peshawar Stamp Society, which
is published every sixty days of the Roman calendar.
In 1998 Peshawar Stamp Society played a vital and founding role in the
creation of a National Federation of philatelic bodies, which is now known
as Philatelic Federation of Pakistan (PFP). Since then Pakistan has become
an active participant on the international philatelic forum. The members of
the society have won several awards at the FIAP and FIP exhibitions.
FUTURE AIMS
The next object of the society is to host a FIAP exhibition in Pakistan by
the year 2008. In order to achieve our aim we welcome the philatelic
brethren to lend their support in every possible manner. Their guidance and
suggestions will help us to boost our moral and provide required strength to
fulfill our dream.
Your suggestions are most cordially welcome.
